Thematic Program on

Mathematical Modeling of Materials Across Scales

Duration: 12 months

Academic Year: 2010 – 2011

The subject of the first thematic program is Mathematical Modeling of Materials Across Scales and has a duration of one year. In this thematic program we imbed the following two one-week-long workshops:

  • Coarse-graining of many-body systems: analysis, computations and applications
    In recent years, coarse-graining methods have emerged as a powerful computational tool for applications ranging from chemical engineering and polymers to materials, biology and bioengineering. The mathematical and computational challenges in designing reliable coarsegraining algorithms demand a vast array of methodologies drawn for instance from statistical mechanics, numerical analysis, dynamical systems, statistics, and parallel and high performance computing. In this workshop we plan to bring together a diverse group of experts that cover many of these perspectives; the workshop will be preceded by short tutorials geared towards young researchers and students.

  • Continuum and kinetic methods in the theory of shocks, fronts, dislocations and interfaces
    This workshop will focus on the mathematical study of nonlinear phenomena involving the propagation of singularities in solid mechanics and plasticity. The objective of this workshop is to bring together experts working on kinetic theory techniques, with experts that focus on the development of mathematical modeling for materials at the continuum level and to explore the interplay of these rapidly developing topics. At the level of materials we expect to address the areas of modeling of crystalline surfaces at the nanoscale, that of complex flows involving polymeric solutions. And on the continuum side of modeling the topics of dynamic cavitation, shear bands, shock waves in elastic media, phase transitions and interfaces in solids, dislocations.
